What is Scleroderma ?
I'm sure you may have asked
yourself this question already.
Scleroderma, or systemic
sclerosis, is a chronic connective tissue disease generally classified as one of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases. The word “scleroderma” comes from two Greek words: “sclero” meaning hard,
and “derma” meaning skin. Hardening of the skin
is one of the most visible manifestations of the disease.
My Mother has Scleroderma..
I'm not sure exactly when she was diagnosed but it was sometime
in my early childhood. She has a slowly progressing type of the disease and she's on many medications for it. It's hard for her because she also takes medications for other health problems and one pill that can easily help
one problem can cause one of her other health
problems to get worse, so it's been a long road to figure out what she can and can not take.

What is Multiple Sclerosis
?
MS is thought to be
an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Surrounding and protecting the nerve fibers of the CNS is a fatty tissue called myelin, which helps nerve fibers conduct electrical impulses.
In MS, myelin is lost
in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis. These damaged areas are also known as plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken.
Myelin not only protects
nerve fibers, but makes their job possible. When myelin or the nerve fiber is destroyed or damaged, the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain is disrupted, and this produces the various symptoms of MS.
My Cousin Mandy was
diagnosed with MS just a few short years ago. She's a strong person and i have no doubt in my mind she will fight this wth everthing she's got. Every year my
family joins her as well as thousands of other
people for the MS Walk here at Sandy Hook NJ.
In 2006 over 200,000 people walked in the many MS walks across the country and we raised over $53 million dollars to help find a cure for MS.
